1) Q- How do I train for strongman/woman contests?
A- that depends on your level of fitness. If you are new to weightlifting I
suggest spending atleast 6 months to a year in the gym, 3-4 times a week building
your core strength with compound movements. Learn proper technique from a professional
on gym lifts like: squats, deadlifts, power cleans, push presses, snatches and other
movements like pullups, bench presses, abdominal (for lower back support) and grip work.
Add sprints/ bleachers and other agility work to your regimen 2-3 times a week to build
up your lung power and speed. Once you build some core strength you can begin challenging
your muscles and lungs by adding the farmer’s walk with progressively heavier dumbells for
time or distance. Pushing/pulling a truck is another basic event that you can add to your regimen.
If you can get your hands on an old tractor tire, the ‘tire flip’ is also another main stay in
strongman/woman. Learning to pick up odd shaped, heavy items and run full speed is one of the
many challenges to this type of training. Carrying and loading stones, sand bags, or beer kegs
onto a platform is another good training event to build strength, agility, and lung power. Using
ingenuity and being creative is a must for simulating the items used in competition( You can also
come to San Antonio and let me teach you the ropes. Email me for info on personal training)…..
2) Q-how do I get involved in strongman/woman competitions?
A- Getting involved in competitions: Look for local contests in your area( North America
Strongman Association aka “NASS”). Check my website links page for their site link. There are
hundreds all over the US and many in Europe now, too. I suggest watching one first and then try
one for fun. Set realistic goals for the first time out and have a great time! I will guarantee
one thing… you will never find a nicer, more supportive bunch of people in any sport. GOOD LUCK!!
